Ethics Trainings
CARIE and the Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research are sponsoring ethics workshops for social work professionals. This workshop will focus on professional standards and values in relation to aging and health care and will offer a process for resolving ethical dilemmas in social work practice. Issues include: client self-determination and cognitive impairment, confidentiality in the health care environment, client advocacy/client best interests, end-of-life decisions, and professional boundaries and conflicts of interest. Ethics Concept Paper
Michele Mathes, JD, CARIE's Director of Education and Research, has written an ethics of long term care concept paper, "Relationship, Responsibility and Commitment: Cornerstones for an Ethics of Long Term Care," that describes a framework about how to make ethical decisions in long term care settings. The ethics concept paper also provides background information about CARIE's newest training offering, Competence with Compassion™: Ethical Decision-Making in the Changing Culture of Long Term Care.
CARIE's Annual Report
CARIE is pleased to present our Annual Report for July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, celebrating 30 years of advocacy and envisioning our future. CARIE sincerely appreciates the time and contributions our supporters made during this time.
CARIE Partners with Consumer Reports
The Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs Program was initiated in 2004 and seeks to provide unbiased information about prescription drugs to consumers and healthcare professionals. The mission of this program is multifaceted. First, Consumer Reports seeks to provide unbiased in-depth information on prescription drugs to consumers, doctors, pharmacists and others. Second, is to increase access and affordability to needed medicines. Third, is to help relieve the financial burden caused by high drug prices to consumers and business.
A goal is to get the informational brochures from this program into the hands of as many consumers and healthcare professionals as possible. The research shows that the information provided through this program can save an individual up to $2,000 per year depending upon the type of prescription drugs they are taking. It is also important for consumers to remember that while this program does not evaluate a person’s health problems, consumers can use the literature available on Consumer Reports’ website or in hard copy from CARIE to begin a dialogue with their physicians about their individual needs.

CARIE's Newsletters
CARIE is pleased to share our reinstituted newsletters! Newsletters are being produced by staff with the help of three volunteers -- Tim Monahan, Jean McLaughlin, and Mary Mammarella.
CARIE Launches New Web Site
January 16, 2006 - CARIE's website has had a makeover! While our address remains the same, our website has been redesigned and looks completely different. There is expanded content information that will be updated on a regular basis. One of the new features is a “Resource Center” that includes information and links on topics of interest to older adults, their caregivers, aging services' professionals, and students. Now, browsers can also learn how to “Get Involved” to help CARIE advocate for older adults. Some of the popular features from our original website have been preserved but have a new look. Those seeking assistance can still read about CARIE's programs and services as well as utilize the CARIE OnLINE service to receive answers to eldercare questions and help with resolving problems. Thanks to Verve Internet Solutions, the site is very easy to navigate and includes a new Search function. Better Jobs Better Care Pennsylvania

On September 22, CARIE held its 28th Annual Conference, Medicare Part D: Prescription for Confusion at WHYY’s Technology Center.
More than 100 consumers and professionals attended to learn about the challenges and opportunities of the new prescription drug benefit to be provided by Medicare. Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Aging as well as the Director from the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE) program were there to describe the expected impact of the Medicare changes on the PACE program and participants.
